TRUN videogame cover for VGsource

Talking about TRON is talking about a classic science fiction film and one of the best tributes to creativity and imagination in the world of cinema. Somewhat misunderstood film at first, but time makes justice and put TRON in its place. And if we talk about mythical elements of the film, we have to talk about bikelight racings ...

TRUN is a videogame created in Z80 assembler based on  original TRON.
The creators of the game are Vgsource, an indie development group that codes for MSX.
A few months ago, I was contacted to design their videogame cover and thus give it a greater visual impact.
It was an interesting work because from the first moment we looked for a 80's look"  immitating the style of covers of the era of Dinamic or Topo (spanish companies), where Azpiri was king illustrating those beautiful casettes and the less important was the result on screen (at least for people like me)
The first thing I did was to take references, and as it was not going to be otherwise the TRON movie itself was the main source of inspiration. I had several keys in mind while painting this illustration:
  •     blue
  •     Light
  •     No Fx overlay.
  •     Speed
  •     80's smell
Do you want to see how development was? Then we analyze the different phases briefly.

Sketches Phase

After analyzing what I want to emphasize in the image I start working on the sketches.
These are not very detailed drawings, but you can see the main elements of the design.

I decide for the first by movement feeling.

As we know the diagonals add movement to the composition and as I want to transmit speed I choose the design with that scheme and the broad to be able to study where to place each thing. Something that in the end I will change are the bikes. Finally will be even more "homage" to the original light bikes designed by Syd Mead.

References Phase

Being the game a "clone" of the game of TRON does not seem crazy to me to take references of the film. Since we are going to make a copy of a classic we will do well. Let it be noticed! That's why I create a composition with multiple references to then paint over what I need and get the result I want, not so photo but 2d. There is still a lot of work left. This system is not the only one I use for my illustrations.
This is the result of collage done inside Krita. All images have their corresponding copyright. We only use this as an idea. At the end, 100% of the illustration is repainted.

From this point we will work the Backgrounds. For the backgrounds, brushes that are quick for "covering big areas" are usually used. I use a brush that has the characteristic that diffuses the paint when low pressure is used and is adding more paint as the pressure increases. This is what I show you in the capture.

It has a Knive effect and belongs to the set I made for the DVD of the krita foundation #muses. If you are interested you can download it here totally free.

PACK bundle muses

Note: If for some reason you see that this brush produces somekind of "Lag", a very useful thing that speed up this brush and many of Krita's brushes is to use the "precision" parameter inside the brush editor and lower it from 5 to 1 If you also use large sizes you can increase the brush spacing to 0.5 or 0.7. It can be further optimized to gain speed in very large sizes.

Beyond it you will see that it is very fluid but loses a little of quality. These brushes require important computation operations for the CPU but give very interesting results.
What I want is to blur the photo effect but respecting the colors that are underneath while still being spots and at the same time giving me more freedom to paint over. You will see that the result is very pictorial. Handcrafted within the digital.

Now it's time to start defining all the elements of the image.
The face in the photo does not show an emotion according to what I look for, come on man! You're playing with your life in a race! :)
I have created this Gif for those who like to follow the evolution of the steps to follow.

You can see how the lighting changes as I work the metal. The gif was done with Gimp. It explains much more than a page of text. Among other things it is seen how the light is affecting the face of the character and his helmet.

The same thing happens in the background. When I go detailing the bikes and the kind of hangar where they come from.

When completing the image we run the risk of adding too many details. So beware of the Glow and the additive or color dodge modes that hook.
Making lines or curves accurately is complicated with freehand so one way to avoid headaches is to use paint assistants.

For example a use would be in the curve that defines the motorcycle panel of the character.

LightBykes

A main element of this image are the light bikes. Let's do something simple so we do not separate too much from what will be seen on the screen.

The problem as I see it is that the bikes need some lines of movement. This will convey more sense of career. In the end I choose lines not on the whole bike but in part. The result is something more shocking.

Logotype design for the cover

All we have left to do is create a logo for the cover design. For that task I better use an image editor like Gimp and a vector design program like Inkscape.

In Gimp I select the text tool with the previously downloaded typography that is very similar to TRON.

To vary slightly the layout i adjust and complete the contour of the word "TRUN" That way I have a good basis for editing in Inkscape and that can be adapted to any size without loss of quality.

Now we can add the text to our image.
And the end result is what we expected. Did you like it?

Book of Gimp. Review and video.

Hi all,
As you all know, I am always interested to know about new projects and the topic covered today is the best example.
Some time ago I was contacted by “No Starch press” to review one of their books called “The Artist's guide to GIMP by Michael j. Hammel.
It was a great Experience. No doubt is a good book that provides a good starting point with examples to increase our creativity or at least inspire us.
Today I present you my 2nd review. “The book of GIMP” .My first impression is This book is like and adventure and you feel like like Indiana Jones discovering lot of things, going deeper and deeper into the depths of GIMP. At the end of the book you will become a Gimp Expert if you follow the path of knowledge provided by Olivier Lecarme and Karine Delvare.

I thought it would be a good idea to review the book with a video not only text with some photos. So here we go. Is A HD video if you see it in Youtube :D

Book in General:
  • Presentation or look:The book is presented in a standard size for computer related books. It is about 650 pages full of text and images all about Gimp universe. So you can imagine the amount of knowledge this book is covering.
  • Amount of pages. 650 pages is more than you can read in several days. You can consider this book, your personal encyclopedia of Gimp. But that means you need to have patience and don´t give up as you read all the content.
  • Price. I think is very reasonable, Full color, 650 pages and lot of research done for you with tons of links. Of course you can search all the topics on google, but don´t you prefer just read the content and create your own works? I think is perfect for a newbie and also good for a more advanced user that wants to use the book as reference guide.
  • Content. It has a good order and layout because it shows 3 main different parts.
    • 1 Learning
    • 2 Reference
    • 3 Appendices
And I have to say the more you use it, the more confident you feel with the program. Olivier has done a very complete range of topics. And this book is now on my shelve, because I am still learning things too.
  • Web support. Maybe you notice some photos look too small but wait.. no problem! The photos are also in a Website. This is a plus, you can watch all the photos with good resolution
  • Appendices. One of the sections that I didn’t expect to find in the book was the appendices covering things like visual perception, tips and tricks, resources links list. , and so on... I enjoyed it a lot and learnt a lot.

General info.

+1 for “No starch press.” to be an editorial promoting opensource publishing with quality.

Mongul The conqueror. Fan-art.

Title: "Mongul The Conqueror"

Mongul is a Character from the DC universe. First time i read about him was when i was a kid. He was fighting with Superman in Warworld.( One of the best comics that i read during my childhood.) Now I am able to paint him as i want, with all his strenght but in a quiet pose.I started this painting with SAI but, as i am not using SAI anymore i decided to finish him with Gimp and GPS 2. I hope you like this little homage to DC.  All the rights are copyrighted by DC. This is only for fan-art and fun.
Notes:
First aproach was more human than I wanted. So i decided to change his face searching more the "monkeysh" face with prominent forehead and very deep eyes. The Expression was hard to choose because he is arrogant, and the first face was more like "businessman" face :p. not happy with that. Finally i added him some scars as an artistic license. It is not a young Mongul but mid-age.

The Texture Work adds a very interesting "Classic painting" feeling. That is the reason for Dark Browns on the background. This helps to isolate the figure and make more important.

Gimpusers Challenge 1st Place

Click the image to see the finished painting.

Hi all,
some months ago, Gimpusers made a contest with new gimp 2.8 release called . Create a nature landscape scene in GIMP! The subject was Nature or Landscape Painting with no "human technology arround". It was a nice subject and i decided to present my image and see what hapens with it.Thanks Gimpusers crew for organize all the contest.

I had a good idea in mind about mood and color palette, but there wasnt too much details. After few hours of work the landscape turned on in a classical See landscape with rocks and lot of foam in a "emotional-realistic" style. I won the compo so thanks for voting me. and thanks also the others people who presented their works, they were beautiful images too.

Here is the image. If you want it, you can see the "Making of" opening the original file with all the layers separated in 5 stages group layers. Is Not very usual to see these kind of files, but the compo required and here it is, enjoy it :D. Also the image was produced under the CC terms so you can share it freely and post on news or social media, respecting the CC limits.

I hope you like it, thanks for your support and comments.

Vulcano Land Making of.

Recently i published this image on my DeviantArt.and here on the blog. I thought it would be fun to share with all my viewers a bit of the process involved to make it. So there you have...The Vulcano making of!
Click on the image to read all the tips and see it better. questions, ideas and critics on comments or by email are very welcome. I hope you like it.

Vulcano Land in Gimp!

"Vulcano Land" is my last picture done in Gimp 2.8 with GPS.
It is a foreign place where fire rules. I enjoyed  a lot playing with the smoke effect ,fire ,glows and these kind of things. It has a lot of work on textures  painted by hand and using also some photos and painted over again.
I love orangeish tones and this was a perfect test for stability on Gimp 2.8 . 0 Crashes!
with 20 layers divided in groups and masks. here is a capture showing the layout.

As you can see , there is a good amount of info separated in layers. This way the image is more versatile. Really happy with the group layers but i saw that needs to be refined as always , so more good things to come for 2.10, Who knows.

Color Rueda Color Paleta.

  • Move tool selected move the active layer

  • Rotate, Perspective,Skew,Scale tool. Guides = Centerlines
  • Selecciono set de Presets Fav
  • Selecciono set de pinceles FavB
  • Selecciono paleta de color del set GPS_Pal llamado "Classic_Kit_02"

Posibles mejoras.

No necesaria experiencia"
